Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

Background Information

IOM works to help ensure the orderly and humane management of migration, to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees and internally displaced people. The Migration, Environment, Climate Change and Risk Reduction (MECR) Division in the Department of Peace and Development Coordination (DPDC) is the focal point for IOM policy and technical support to policies and programme development on the migration-environment-climate change nexus. The MECR Division has been at the forefront of operational, research, policy, and advocacy efforts, seeking to bring environmental migration to the heart of international, regional and national concerns, in collaboration with its Member States, observers and partners.

The Intern will contribute to the implementation of IOM’s Institutional Strategy on Migration, Environment and Climate Change, 2021-2030. This includes support to IOM’s policy, communication and research work related to migration, environment, climate change and disaster risk reduction (MECR).

Supervision

The Intern will work under the overall supervision of the Head of MECR Division and the direct supervision of the MECR Programme Support Officer, and in cooperation with other colleagues in the Division, at IOM HQ and field Missions.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Support the implementation of the MECR Division Communication Strategy and 2022 Workplan, including the maintenance and update of the Environmental Migration Portal, its Newsletter, social media campaigns; assist in developing social media content; develop communication products.
  2. Carry out research on various thematic areas within the work of the MECR Division such as climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, human rights, sustainable development, children and youth, indigenous peoples, diaspora, water, oceans.
  3. Support the MECR Division with internal coordination with other departments/divisions/offices and contribute to engagements.
  4. Contribute to discussions with different external partners and stakeholders on MECR in the framework of existing consultation mechanisms.
  5. Support the organization of relevant meetings, conferences and workshops, including with logistics, note-taking and preparing background papers, presentations and submissions.
  6. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Training Components and Learning Elements

  • Familiarization with major themes in the global debate relevant to MECR.
  • Insight into multilateral political processes and frameworks.
  • Understanding of policy-making processes and IOM’s work on migration, environment, climate change and disaster risk reduction.
  • Interaction with IOM departments and offices at large, in particular in headquarters and with Regional Thematic Specialists based in IOM Regional Offices.
  • Understanding of the daily mechanisms of international organizations in the development and implementation of projects.
  • Exposure to the multicultural environment and procedural approach of an international,inter-governmental organization.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

Master’s degree in Migration Studies, Statistics, International Relations, Social Sciences, Development Studies, International Affairs or a related field from an accredited institution.

Experience

Practical experience multi-tasking, prioritizing and working independently.

Skills

  • Excellent writing skills (able to draft quickly, precisely and effectively for government and other audiences) in English;
  • Excellent editing skills (attention to detail and ability to review and edit documents) in English;
  • Excellent internet skills (expertise in web creation and understanding of web communication and social media);
  • Organizational skills (ideally experience in conference preparation and logistics) and attention to detail;
  • Knowledge of migration issues and in particular interest in migration, environment, climate and disaster matters;
  • Excellent command of English; French, Spanish or another language an advantage;
  • Team spirit and ability to multitask and perform under pressure.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Eligibility and Selection

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

  1. have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
  2. are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or forwhom internship is required to complete their studies; or
  3. are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
  4. are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme(minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months. e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and security clearances.
