Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) contributes to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through the FAO Strategic Framework by supporting the transformation to MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems, for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.

Through its Country Offices, or FAO Representations, FAO assists governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to address hunger and malnutrition, and provides technical support for the sustainable development of their agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors. The activities of the FAO Country Offices include design and implementation of country-tailored field programmes, liaison with local donor representatives, and active public awareness-raising and outreach activities related to FAO initiatives such as the World Food Day.

Reporting Lines

The Communication and Knowledge Management Specialist will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative (FAOR) in Malawi, and in coordination with the JP GTA Global Coordinator, the JP GTA Knowledge Management and Communication Specialist, the FAO Malawi JP GTA team, the FAO Malawi Senior Communications Specialist, and the JP GTA Malawi RBA focal points.

Technical Focus

The Specialist will be responsible for the visibility, communication and knowledge management of the joint and the FAO-specific activities under the JP GTA in Malawi.

Tasks and responsibilities

  •  Develop and implement a communication, knowledge management and visibility plan for the JP GTA in Malawi for the remaining period of implementation based on the global JP GTA Communication, Knowledge Management and Visibility Plan.
  •  Monitor and ensure compliance with the visual identity guidelines of the JP GTA and use of the JP GTA logo and that of the RBAs and the European Union.
  •  Manage a repository of information for the JP GTA in Malawi (information brochures, presentations, reports, case studies, and training manuals) and a photo bank of the activities.
  •  Prepare informative bulletins – executive progress report in the form of communication material.
  •  Support the production and development of publications and other knowledge products (editing, design, layout, publishing, dissemination, printing, etc.).
  •  Source audiovisual material and other engaging content about the activities, progress, results, experiences and lessons learned of the JP GTA, in a variety of formats, including for use in social networks for the joint and the FAO-specific activities.
  •  Disseminate information on the JP GTA progress, actions, good practices, success stories and results via social media accounts of the implementing partners, in traditional media and third-party platforms, on the website of the JP GTA and the RBAs, and via other dissemination channels.
  •  Source and write up success stories, human interest stories and testimonials from participants, government partners and technicians for use in audio-visual materials and other formats for the joint and the FAO-specific activities.
  •  Support and promote knowledge exchange events, opening and closing ceremonies, and other strategic events and training workshop for the joint and the FAO-specific activities s.
  •  Support the coordination of field visits for different audiences (European Union Delegation, media, government officials, donors, civil society).
  •  Liaison with the Office of Communication (OCC) will be maintained, either directly or through an agreed focal point/coordinator, to ensure compliance with OCC standards, appropriate review and clearance processes. All communication materials will follow FAO clearance processes and comply with FAO standards, including:

Minimum Requirements

  •  University degree in communication, social communication, communication for development, public relations or related disciplines.
  •  At least 3 years of work experience in the implementation of communication and visibility strategies.
  •  Working knowledge of spoken and written English.
  •  National of Malawi or a resident in the country with a valid work permit.
