The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA’s Major Programme 2, “Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection”. This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme’s objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.
The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences is responsible for assisting and advising Member States in research and development for the nuclear sciences, especially the physical and chemical sciences. Specifically, the Division provides support to Member States in the following fields: production of radioisotopes and radiolabelled products for applications in health care and industry; radiation source applications; research reactor utilization; applications of accelerators and nuclear instrumentation; nuclear and atomic data for applications; controlled nuclear fusion and isotope hydrology and geochemistry.
The Physics Section is responsible for planning and implementing activities in the areas of (i) effective utilization of research reactors and accelerator-based neutron sources, (ii) fostering relevant research and development and applications using particle accelerators and related instrumentation, and (iii) nuclear fusion science and plasma physics, in order to enable Member States to avail themselves of the benefits of nuclear sciences and technologies. It operates the Nuclear Science and Instrumentation Laboratory, located at the Agency’s Laboratories in Seibersdorf, which assists laboratories in Member States to improve the effective utilization of nuclear spectrometry and related instrumentation by providing technical advice, training, calibration services, assistance with the modification and development of nuclear instruments and with new applications of nuclear spectrometry techniques in various fields, including energy related applications, environmental monitoring, industry, and the study of cultural heritage objects.
As a key team member reporting to the Section Head, the Nuclear Physicist (Neutrons) supports international cooperation on the development of research reactor- and accelerator-based techniques and applications thereof and fosters exchange of scientific results among the various partners. Additionally, she/he supports Member States through advice on the role and utilization of neutron sources and accelerators and by fostering collaborations among stakeholders, including from industry.
The Nuclear Physicist (Neutrons) is: (1) a planner and coordinator, formulating, developing, organizing and implementing the IAEA’s activities on fostering enhanced cooperation in accelerator and neutron source applications and development; and (2) a specialist, coordinating research through coordinated research projects, evaluating and implementing technical cooperation projects and helping Member States make best use of different types of accelerators and neutron sources as well as related instrumentation for materials research and other purposes.
Functions / Key Results Expected
- Organize and implement activities (coordinated research projects, thematic meetings, workshops) to support emerging promising applications of accelerator technology.
- Serve as scientific secretary in Technical Meetings and Research Coordination Meetings and as co-scientific secretary for IAEA accelerator symposia, and participate in other meetings as necessary.
- Compile, or coordinate the preparation of, proceedings or technical reports and documents. Ensure the quality and timely updating of the IAEA’s accelerator and neutron source database.
- Evaluate and identify novel/existing techniques for utilizing accelerators and neutron sources to bring benefits to Member States from nuclear science and technology.
- Evaluate and recommend proposals for the award of research contracts and technical cooperation projects in the above fields.
- Provide technical advice for technical cooperation projects in accelerators and neutron sources.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
Nuclear Physics or relevant field. PhD in the same disciplines is an asset.
At least five years of relevant experience in nuclear physics utilizing accelerators and neutron sources, including use of different techniques for materials research and related instrumentation, computational investigative tools and new techniques; a minimum of 3 years’ experience should have been at an accelerator or neutron source facility.
Experience in an international working environment would be an advantage.
Experience in education and training of researchers and technologists.
Experience in neutron beam- and synchrotron-based experiments, would be an asset.
Experience in radiation effects on materials or materials damage using neutrons and ion beams would be an asset.
Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $64121 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 27187*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks’ annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
