Organisational Setting and ReportingThe United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For close to forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes. The position is in the Human Rights and Social Inclusion Unit. The Urban Practices Branch (UPB) is the tools and methodology production and skills centre of the UN-Habitat, which develops normative guidance and cutting-edge tools through communities of urban practice. It provides technical and policy advice approaches and methodologies to Multi-Country Offices/ Country Offices, governments and partners and mainstreams them throughout the programme portfolio. The Human Rights and Social Inclusion Unit (HRSI) carries out two tracks: the social inclusion dimension, which encompasses human rights; gender; children, youth and older persons; and disability; and the cross-cutting thematic area: safety. The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Nairobi, Kenya, Global Solutions Division/ Human Rights and Social Inclusion Unit is for 6 (six) months. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the interns’ assigned office as well as the internship period. Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the intern will: – Support the review of project documents and drafting of proposals, training curriculum, concept notes and talking points for HRSI’s initiatives. – Support knowledge management for the HRSI repository of tools and resources, and in the management of the unit’s online repository. – Support the organization and reporting of Community of Practice sessions on various social inclusion thematic areas. – Support the development of a donor database for HRSI and assist with resource mobilization efforts. – Support the organization of events and activities, and follow up on meetings with partners and beneficiaries including scheduling and participating in team meetings. – Support research activities, and the development of infographics and presentations as needed. – Provide programme support to the Youth 2030 Cities project and the SDG Scorecard ongoing activities such as the development of monitoring, evaluation, learning and reporting framework. – Support the Programme Management Officer when needed. – Carry out any other tasks requested to support the Human Rights and Social Inclusion unit.

EducationApplicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of studies: Business Development, Business Management, Social Entrepreneurship, Business Administration, or any related field of study.
Work ExperienceNo working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Basic understanding of project support is required. Experience in drafting professional documents concept notes, proposals or talking points reports is desirable.
LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in written and oral English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
