Organisational Setting and ReportingThis position is located within the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), duty station Bamako. The Air Operations Assistant with duty station in Bamako reports to the designated Chief of Unit in the Aviation Section through the Sub-Unit supervisor.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Air Operations Assistant will carry out the following duties:
- Plans and coordinates air transportation activities in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures, UN directives, Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) Aviation Manual, UN Aviation Standards for Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Air Transport Operations (UN AVSTADS), ICAO standards and recommended practices and the host country’s Aeronautical Information Publications (AIPs).
- Provides inputs to the management for the efficient, effective and safe use of the UN air assets.
- Monitors technical and safety performance of the UN air assets.
- Liaises with relevant aviation authorities for the coordination of flight clearances.
- Collects and verifies Aircraft Use Reports (AURs), fuel and other invoices.
- Assists in processing performance assessment and contract completion reports.
- Assists with the coordination of ground handling support and hotel accommodation/meal/transportation arrangements for aircrews
- Controls documents and ensures that SOPs, policies, guidelines and procedures are in place and easily accessible.
- Assists with the coordination of the integrated search and rescue operations for UN air assets and other aircraft upon request.
- Constructs the hard copy Flight Following log for individual flights
- Performs other related duties as required.

EducationHigh School Diploma or equivalent is required. Technical or vocational certificate/license in Air Transportation/Flight Operations, Aviation Safety Management, Air Traffic Control, Aircraft Maintenance, or graduation from an equivalent military establishment is required. Valid driver’s license “Category B” is required.
Work ExperienceA minimum total of 6 years of progressively responsible experience in aviation is required. A minimum of two (2) years of experience in any of the two following areas directly related to Air Transport Operations or Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) functions, is required: a) Flight/Air operations; b) ATC/radio operations; c) Contract Administration and Performance Management; c) Aviation Resource Planning and Administration; d) Budget/financial administration for air transportation/ATNS. Experience in the field of aviation at the international level in complex, volatile, conflict or post-conflict environments is required. Experience in use and handling of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) electronic system, air transport operational databasis/applications is required. Experience and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (word, outlook, excel, and power point) is required. Experience in the use of ICAO standards and recommended practices is desirable.
LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French language is desirable.
AssessmentEvaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

- This position is temporarily available until 31/07/2023. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
